10 Parenthood Mysteries

10. It is possible for a child to spend nine months in your womb, carry half of your DNA, and somehow emerge not looking a darn thing like you.

9.  You can take your child to the doctor with a 105 degree fever and be told, “He’ll be okay.  It’s just a virus” and that actually be true.

8. The grandparents swear that your children are angels EVERY TIME they spend the night, which is interesting since they turn into demons immediately upon their return home.

7. The same son whose teacher  refers to him as ‘nurturing’ and ‘loving’ to all the little kids at preschool has a daily habit of purposely plowing over his toddler sister.

6. Your child amazingly does not suffer from malnutrition, even though the last time he ate what you cooked for dinner was two years ago.

5. Your children fight naps every day, yet you would give up your gall bladder in exchange for a nap once a week.

4. Somehow your child’s 15 minute nap in the car takes the place of his three hour afternoon nap.

3. When your kids stay up two hours past their bedtime, they wake up one hour earlier than usual.

2. You were sure of how you would handle every situation before you had kids thanks to your parenting books.  Now, you want to return the books to the author, along with your kids, for a long weekend.

1. Even though your kids drive you crazy every day, it is inevitable that you will miss them and call them at grandma’s before the night is over.

What mystifies you?

  1. I look forward to Tuesday mornings for your "10" list. Sitting here with coffee and
enjoying the present but also reminiscing (sp?) when you and Lisa were infants, toddlers, and now moms. And, i promise you, they really ARE ANGELS when they spend the night(s). Look for all the blessings they give you daily; b/c before you know it you will be the grandma. Oh my,in one of my nostalgic moods today.
    Love you, Mom

  2. #4 is SO true Jennifer! My kids do that all the time…and people wonder why I am crazy about getting them home in enough time for their naps. I just want them to actually take one! 🙂 Great list! SY

  3. I love this, especially #7. All my son's teachers have said he's soo quiet, he hardly talks. HA! I need to invite them to my house for just an hour, then they can see the "real" boy.

  4. How very true! The one that blows my mind the most is the going to bed late and getting up early. If I go to bed late I want to sleep in. Thanks for the laughs!!

  5. I'm mystified by all these things, too! Especially number 2. So much for sleeping in. But, if I put them to bed 1/2 hour early, they'll sleep 12 or 12 1/2 hours. I just don't get it! Thanks for adding a little humor to these sometimes frustrating moments!

  7. LOL You know I never understand when people make comments like 'she has his nose' or 'he has the family's hair'. My kids are now 3,5,&8 and I still don't see either myself or my husband in them (personality wise, yes, but not physical). I always thought maybe it's because I'm too close to them to notice. Now I know it's one of those Parenting Mysteries. Thanks for reassuring me 🙂

    1. Well, I have to admit that my daughter, our middle child, looks exactly like her father. She does not have one single physical characteristic of me, though. And since she is my 'terrible two', I'm starting to wonder if she has any personality traits, either! 😉

  9. HILARIOUS!!! 🙂 I've just recently exprienced #3!! We started putting our DD to bed an hour later than usual thinking she would sleep longer the next morning. Nope. She started waking up an HOUR EARLIER – FIVE AM!!!! *sigh* Now that she's going to bed at 6pm again, she sleeps till 6am. Very mysterious. Great list!!!

  10. Have you ever considered creating an e-book or guest authoring on other sites? I have a blog based on the same theme if you’re interested.

  11. Hi there, a very good read and it sometimes just takes someone to post something like this to make me realise where I’ve been going wrong! Just added the site to my bookmarks so will check back now and then. Cheers.
